Abstract

The following paper deals with the difficulties modal particles create for learners of German as a foreign language. Teaching methods of this word type which has no lexical semantics are challenging; different methods will be discussed. The ability for understanding - and furthermore for a confident usage - of modal particles is a basic component for fluent and partner-oriented everyday conversations. I will present an approach of teaching the usage of modal particles in prototypical chunks (Handwerker/Madlener 2009). I will focus on a subclass of modal particles, the so-called Konsensus-Konstitutiva doch, eben/halt and ja (Lütten 1977 and 1979); they presuppose consensus between the interlocutors. In a corpus-based analysis of spoken German I will carve out prototypical constructions, for example of the type “Das nennt man doch so” (It is called like that and we both know it). The aim is to provide constructions as potential chunks which can easily be processed and memorized by learners of German. A corpus-based analysis of the consensus-constituting modal particles in spoken German forms the basis of my recommendations for teaching them integrated in spoken discourse.
