Abstract

The different positions of the finite verb in German constitute a tricky problem for learners of German and it comes as no surprise that these verbal positions present difficulties to learners regardless of their specific language background. Comparing the basic facts of German and Chinese, one may put forward the hypothesis that Chinese Learners of German (CLG) should have more trouble with the clause-final position of the finite verb in subordinate clauses than with the second position in independent declarative clauses. This paper attempts to verify this hypothesis by examining conversations between six advanced CLGs currently studying at German universities and six native speakers of German. Contrary to the hypothesis just mentioned, the results reveal that deviations are more frequent in main declarative clauses, which should feature the finite verb in second position, than in subordinate verb-final clauses. In view of both the contrastive analysis theory and the interlanguage hypothesis, the paper discusses reasons for these unexpected results. With regard to verb second, at least some deviations produced by the informants are caused by his/her native tongue, in particular verb-third-structures. Unlike this, the fact that all informants live in Germany and are thus in constant contact with native speakers of German accounts for some interlanguage-related deviations leading to erroneous verb-first-structures.
